FREE CLIMBING -
Map of the streets.
The Santa Croce massif is most known for its wonderful free-climbing tracks that fit
every climber, from the beginner to the advanced. The big wall is one of the most difficult
climbing trails in the Dolomites; and so are all the trails starting from S. Croce, the
famous climber of Val Badia will tell us feeling and impressions in climbing this wonderful
mountain. Expert climbers know Sass dla Crusc. Many famous climbers, as for eg.
Messner, Mayerl, Livanas und Hainzl climbed this wonderful rock, It offers a variety
of trails, going from medium to difficult.
In the 60's a new trail was opened, and it is still one of the most difficult trails in the
Dolomites. It is called
"Messner al pilastro di mezzo" named after Messner, who was the first to climb it.
Years later Heinz Mariacher, an expert climber, discovered a new trail. It is considered a
pretty difficult trail and yet few people have actually tried it. And those who tried it
wonder how Messner could climb it, considering the equipment of those times
Sass dla Crusc is meant for expert climbers. There are no trails for 3rd grade lovers.
The rock is of calcareous origin. It is very fragile on the lower side, but very solid on the
upper part, especially on the
"Diretta Grande Muro" that is considered the best trail.
Many trails a of medium difficulty, but you can also find newer and more difficult trails
as "Pilastro di destra", "Jugendliebe" and "Suspiria" all grade 6 b; they are meant for
very expert climbers.
Traditional routes are well protected. Dolomites lovers have to come here at least once in
their lifetimes.
