RAIT DE SAN LINERT – Photo Exhibition

RAIT DE SAN LINERT – Tradiziun y cultura ladina
This is what the photo exhibition of this year is about:

Horse ride of San Leonardo – The roots of this special tradition!

The Church of San Leonardo is dedicated to the two saints, Saint Leonard and Saint James. Its current appearance, apart from the Romanesque bell tower, is marked by the Baroque style. The interior paintings are the work of M. Günther, executed in 1778. It is considered as one of the most beautiful Churches of Ladinia.

In olden times, on November the 6th, the village held a procession to honor Saint Leonard and it was a day dedicated to prayer. This day is in memory of Leonardo di Noblac (San Linert) born in Gaul, one of the most popular Saints in Central Europe. San Linert decided to take the archiepiscopal route of Reims to help the prisoners. He dedicated then his whole life to assisting the sick and the needy.

What is this festive parade abouu?

Every autumn, on the first Sunday after All Saints in November, a parade in honor of Saint Leonard, patron of the horses and the knights takes place in San Leonardo in Badia.

The day begin always, as the tradition demands it, with the Holy Mass in the Church of San Leonardo and ends with the blessing of cattle and its holders. The parade takes place in between. Horses, the stars of the day, from all around show off their splendor, as their holders prepared them to shine with crowns and ornaments on the days before.

It is also a meeting opportunity for all Ladin and Southtyrolean people, for all horse, music and tradition lovers. Some local bands also take part to grace the event. The party is not over yet, all spectators and participants are invited to try delicious local dishes.

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary, a miniature of the Parish Church of San Leonardo was created by several local artists and artisans. Since then it is present every year and probably one of the most awaited figures.
